Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Cathering Nicoll was born about 1849 in Berwickshire, Scotland.

She married George Black on 24 November 1871 in Glasgow and they had two daughters, one who died in infancy.

In 1875 they emigrated to Otago on the Invercargill and had a further seven children.

When Catherine signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Lawrence in Central Otago and George was working as an engine driver.

He was 'the first driver on the Milton-Lawrence section of the railway when it opened in 1877 (a position he retained for 34 years).'

Catherine died at her home on 14 November 1924 and George died at their daughter’s home in Dunedin in 1928. They are buried together in the Lawrence Cemetery.
