Harriet Emily Mervyn was born about 1843 in County Cavan, Ireland – the second daughter of John Jones Mervyn.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she married George Daniels, a gardener, on 28 March 1870 in the York Hotel, Dunedin.
They had eight children, three who died in infancy, and when Harriet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Castle Street.
George died in 1903 and Harriet died on 19 February 1912 – they are both buried in the Northern Cemetery.
