Elizabeth Callahan was born about 1832 in Ireland, she married Gerald Murphy, a pavier, in London in 1856.
They had three daughters in London before coming to New Zealand in the mid 1850s. Three more children were born in New Zealand.
Gerald was declared bankrupt in 1872 and he died in 1874, aged 46.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Elm Row, Dunedin.
She died on 1 August 1909 and is buried with her family in the Southern Cemetery.
