Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:
Catherine Johnston was born c1862. She married George Smith Valentine at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Gore, in 1891. They had one son, George Smith Valentine. They settled in Pukerau, Southland, where George was a shopkeeper. Catherine’s husband died in 1936. Catherine died in 1942, aged 81 years, and was buried with her husband at Pukerau Cemetery.
