Biography and image contributed by Robbie Titchener:

Sarah Jane Pace was born in 1835 in Sunderland, England.  She was the daughter of Robert Pace, a shipwright, and Eleanor (nee Spraggon).

She married George Watson in June 1858 and, less than two months later, they set sail on the Indiana to NZ, arriving in Christchurch on 23 November that same year.  Also on board were George's mother (possibly fleeing a bad marriage) and some of his siblings.

They settled in Rangiora, where George first worked as a shepherd and farmer, before eventually becoming a butcher.

Their first child was born in April 1859 and they would have another 13 children over the next 20 years.

Sarah died in 1905.
