Ann McAinsh was born on July 26th 1814 in Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland, the daughter of Robert McAinsh and Elizabeth Drummond.

She married John Gow, a weaver, on December 26th 1834 in Auchterarder. They had at least five children before John died in the 1860s.

Sometime after this Ann emigrated to Otago where three of her children also went.
