Janet Miller Watson was born on 23 July 1858 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Watson, a mason, and Jane Rennie Miller.
She emigrated to Canterbury in 1874 with her family on the City of Glasgow.
Janet married Henry Maxwell in 1880 and they had 11 children.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Dundas St, Dunedin and Henry was working as a factory inspector.
Henry died in Dunedin in 1931 and Janet died on 12 November 1937 in Invercargill.
They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
