Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Floyd was born on 5 October 1847 in Ulverston, Lancashire, England – the daughter of James Edward Floyd, an engine fitter, and Jane Keen.
She married John Hand, an iron ore miner, on 23 November 1868 in Cumbria.
The couple emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1870s and their only child John was born in 1873.
Jane’s widowed father and three siblings came to Otago in 1884 & when her brother Israel died in 1885 his funeral left from Jane’s home in Athol Row (later Athol Place) for the cemetery.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were still in Athol Place.
Jane died on 25 August 1904 and John died in 1923, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
