Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Mitchell was born about 1858 in Australia - she came to New Zealand when she was very young.

Margaret married James Thomas Hare, a paper ruler and widower with five children, on 9 December 1885 in Dunedin.

Margaret and James had four children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in York Place, Dunedin although Margaret gave her address as Elm Row, nearby.

James committed suicide in 1931 'while in a state of extreme mental depression caused by illness' and Margaret died on 10 June 1940, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
