Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ellen Pulling was born on 18 May 1836 in Southwark, Surrey, England – the daughter of Charles Pulling, a potato salesman, and Elizabeth Sarah.
She emigrated to Victoria, Australia with her family in 1853 on the Gibson Craig.
There is no record of her marriage to John Harris in Victoria but they had four children, two who died in infancy, before the family sailed for Otago in the early 1860s.
They settled in Dunedin and had, at least, a further six children before John died in 1884.
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living with some of her children in Walker Street.
She died at her home on 31 May 1913 and is buried with John in the Southern Cemetery.
