Elizabeth Grundy was born in 1860 in Ulcely, Lincolnshire, England – the daughter of Joseph Grundy, a foreman, and Hannah Brinkell.

She emigrated to New Zealand about 1870 and married Benjamin Hatfield, a horse collar maker, in 1886.

They had no children.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living in Sydney St, Opoho, Dunedin.

She died on 3 January 1915 and Benjamin died in 1925, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
