Elizabeth McKay was born about 1845 in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland – the daughter of John McKay.
She married William Henderson, a mason, on 29 May 1865 in Edinburgh.
They had 8 children, one who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1884 on the Florida.
The family had one further child after their arrival and they settled in Dunedin.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leith Walk, North East Valley, Dunedin.
William died in 1908 after which Elizabeth moved to Timaru where she died on 18 December 1923.
They are both buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
