Mary Ann Rainton was was born in New Zealand in 1864 – the daughter of Joseph Rainton, a baker, and Jane Bruton.

She married Henry Longworth, a brickmaker, on 22 June 1882 in Dunedin and they had eight children.

When Mary Ann signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, North East Valley, Dunedin.

Henry died in 1907 and Mary Ann died on 3 January 1911, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
