Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Keen was born in 1849 in Stanford, Berkshire, England – the daughter of Joseph Keen, an agricultural labourer, and Ann Litton.

She married Alfred Hicks, also an agricultural labourer, in 1869 and they had four children before they emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Earl of Zetland.

The family settled in Dunedin and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forbury Rd, St Clair.

Jane died at their home on 13 March 1906 and Alfred died in 1934, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
