Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Harriet Wheatley Sharp was born in about 1856 in Blockley, Worcestershire, England – the eldest daughter of Henry Sharp, a farm labourer, and Elizabeth Southam.

Harriet emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Hindostan with her parents and eight siblings.

In July 1875, at St Matthews, Dunedin, Harriet married William Higginson, a butcher. The family lived in Richardson St, St Kilda and they had eight children.

Harriet died at Richardson St on 30 October 1933 and William died in 1937. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
