Mary Ann Alexander was born about 1847 in Scotland.
She came to New Zealand about 1862 and married David Hill, a farrier, in 1871.
They had at least six children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row, Dunedin.
David died at his home in 1894 and Mary died on 4 May 1905, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
