Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret/Maggie Isabella Young was born in 1864 in New Zealand – the daughter of Alexander Young and Jane.

Maggie spent her early years in Oamaru. On 3 March 1892 she married Frank Ellsworth Hillkier, a hairdresser, at the Oamaru Baptist Church. They moved to Dunedin and when Maggie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Maitland St. They had six children.

Maggie was active in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and, for a time, was president of the United Temperance Reform Council.

Frank died in 1940 and Maggie died on 8 May 1952. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
