The 1893 electoral roll confirms Elizabeth Lawrence Tuapeka elect wife

Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth/Bessie Muff was born in 1862 in London – the daughter of Isaac Muff, a coachman, and Mary Ann Roberts. (See 199 Mrs Muff)

She emigrated to Canterbury with her family in 1874 on the Duke of Edinburgh and they settled in Christchurch.

She married Walter Moreton Hindmarsh, a bank clerk, on 29 December 1887 at St John’s, Christchurch and they had three children

When Bessie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Lawrence, Central Otago where Walter was employed as bank manager. (She signed in Christchurch while visiting her mother and sisters).

The family moved around the country living in Dunedin, Christchurch, Oamaru, Dannevirke and Timaru before retiring to Christchurch in the mid 1920s.

Elizabeth died on 11 August 1945 and Walter died in 1947, they were both cremated and their ashes were 'dispersed to the four winds of Heaven'.
