Margaret Gibson was born about 1841 in Scotland and she emigrated to New Zealand about 1860.

Margaret married William Henry Edward Howes, known as Henry, an expressman, in 1873. They had four children.

When she signed the suffrage petition Margaret was living with her family in Dalry St, Dunedin.

Their two daughters died in 1910 and 1911 and Margaret died on 9 June 1914.

Henry died in 1927 and they are buried with one of their daughters in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
