Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Barber was born in 1853 in London – the daughter of John Barber, an artificial florist, and Sarah Leigh Crocker.

She married John Hudson, a carman, on 30 March 1873 in Islington, London.

They had one daughter before they sailed for Otago in 1875 on the James Nicol Fleming.

The family settled in Dunedin where they had a further 10 children.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition they were living in Sydney St, Caversham.

John died in 1930 and Sarah died on 3 September 1933 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
