Elizabeth Gibb was born about 1851 in Scotland.

She married John Hughes on 6 June 1873 in Dalmellington, Ayrshire and they had two children before they emigrated to Otago in 1876 on the Dunedin.

They settled in Dunedin and had a further six children.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, South Dunedin.

John died on 29 April 1909 and Elizabeth died later that year on 24 September – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
