Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Keddie was born in 1857 in Beath, Fifeshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Keddie and Margaret Crichton.

She married George Hunter in Beath in 1873 and they had two sons before the family emigrated to New Zealand about 1878.

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further 10 children, one who died in infancy.

In 1892 George was charged with deserting the family and failing to provide for the maintenance of his children.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living with her children in Forbury Rd, South Dunedin.

George appears to have lived with the family occasionally as four of their children were born after his desertion.

George died at their daughter’s home in Dunedin in 1931 and Margaret died on 16 October 1950 in Dunedin – they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
