Eliza Yates was born in 1868 in London, the daughter of Thomas Yates and Ann Smith.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Atrato and they settled in Dunedin.
Eliza married Alfred Hurndell, a butcher, on August 20th 1890 at her parents’ home in Caversham.
They had 10 children, and when Eliza signed the suffrage petition they were living in Palmerston, north of Dunedin.
Alfred died in Dunedin Hospital in 1925. He is buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.
Eliza died in November 1946 in Carterton. She is buried in the Clareville Cemetery.
