Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Isabella Alison McIntyre was born on 20 November 1838 in Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of James McIntyre, a painter, and Euphemia Alison.

She emigrated to Otago in the 1860s and married James Burgess in 1863.

They had seven children, three who died in infancy.

The family lived in Hampden in North Otago where James was declared insolvent in 1869 before moving to Roxburgh in the 1870s.

James died in Roxburgh in 1888. Soon after Isabella and her children shifted to Dunedin & when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Frederick St and Isabella was working as a dressmaker.

Isabella advertised in the paper in 1890 that she had 'resumed her day and evening cutting and fitting classes.'

Isabella died at her home in Dunedin on 26 December 1927, she is buried, presumably with James, in the Roxburgh Cemetery.
