Margaret McEwan was born about 1868. She married John Aitken, a painter, on 9 November 1887 in South Dunedin.

They had four children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Reid Rd, South Dunedin.

John died at their home in 1926 and Margaret died on 7 March 1960.

She was cremated and her ashes buried with John in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
