Janet Colqhon was born about 1841 in Glasgow, Scotland.
She emigrated to Otago in 1860 on the Bruce and she married Richard Carruthers, a carpenter, on 15 February 1861 in Dunedin.
They had eight children, three who died in infancy, and they lived at Tokoiti near Milton where Janet signed the suffrage petition.
Richard died in 1907 at their home 'The Bush' and Janet died on 16 January 1923, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
