Ellen Rachel Penny was born about 1860 in Australia.

She married James Crisp, a railway guard from Naples, Italy, in 1875 in New Zealand and they had five children.

The family lived in Port Chalmers then Lawrence in Central Otago where Ellen signed the suffrage petition.

In 1894 James was transferred to Outram before they retired to Dunedin.

Ellen died at her home on 19 August 1919 and James died in 1922, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
