Mary was born about 1844 in Ireland. She emigrated to Otago with her husband Michael James Crowe (also known as James), a labourer, in 1874 on the Peter Denny with their four children and they settled in Dunedin.
They had a further five children after their arrival and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Pine Hill Terrace, North East Valley, Dunedin.
Michael died at their home in 1909 after which Mary moved to Timaru where she died on 12 July 1927.
They are buried with their son in the Southern Cemetery.
