Julia Elizabeth Fanny King was born in London, England in 1863 – the daughter of Matthew John King, a carpenter, and Julia Emma Butler.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Hindustan and they settled in Dunedin.

Julia married contractor Edwin Gough in 1888 and they had five children, one who died in infancy.

When Julia signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Buchanan St, Maryhill, Mornington.

Julia died at her home on 27 October 1922 and Edwin died in 1922 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
