Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen/Ellen Morrison was born on 17 March 1860 in Berwickshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Morrison and Mary Cleghorn.

She moved to Newcastle on Tyne in Northumberland with her family as an infant and she emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s.

Ellen married John Thomas Hastie, a pit headman, on 12 July 1878 in Green Island near Dunedin.

They had seven children and lived in Fairfield where Ellen signed the suffrage petition.

John died in Dunedin in 1933 and Ellen died on 2 September 1949 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
