Elizabeth Maria Fairchild was born on 2 August 1853 in St Martin, Jersey Islands, the daughter of James Fairchild and Maria Morris.
Elizabeth arrived in New Zealand about 1881. She married John Elias Hellyer, a carpenter, in 1884. They had six children, two of who died young.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family was living in Scott St, St Kilda, Dunedin.
John died there in 1910. Elizabeth died on 24 August 1937. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
