Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Gilchrist Brown was born on 4 September 1853 in Carmichael, Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Brown and Marion Somerville.

She came to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and they settled in Southland.

Jane married James Mabon Laurie, an engine driver, on 30 December 1875 at Roslyn Bank and they had 14 children.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Oraki near Colac Bay.

Jane died on 23 August 1938 and James died four months later – they are buried together in the Riverton Cemetery.
