Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet/Jessie Thomson was born on 26 October 1841 in Corstorphine, Edinburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Thomson, a market gardener and seedsman, and Ann Ferguson.

She emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s and she married William Martin, a widower with two children and a nurseryman, on 13 February 1885 at Fairfield.

Janet signed the suffrage petition at their home 'Fairfield' after which the suburb was named. William’s 'extensive gardening establishment there is well known as one of the most picturesque spots on the Main South road'.

He died there in 1905 and Janet died in Christchurch on 3 August 1918 – they are buried with William’s first wife in the Green Island Cemetery.
