Jessie/Janet Gartshore was born in 1862 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Gartshore, a brickmaker, and Mary Stirling.
She married John McConnell, an engine driver, in 1886. They had two daughters, one who died in infancy. The family lived in Russell St, Dunedin.
Jessie died on 24 January 1931 and John died in 1955. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
