Ellen Gray was born about 1855 in Scotland.

She married James Petch Simon, a boot manufacturer, in 1876 in New Zealand and they had nine children, one who died in infancy.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forth St, Dunedin.

Ellen died on 11 December 1924 and James died in 1927, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
