Maria McDowell McEachen was born about 1847 in Nelson, New Zealand – the daughter of Archibald McEachen, a builder, and Maria.
She married Joseph Reid Bremner, a merchant, in Dunedin on 14 November 1867.
They had eight children and lived at Hamiltons on the Otago Goldfields where Joseph ran a store. In the 1870s the family moved to Hampden in North Otago where they also had a store.
The 1880s saw the family moving to Dunedin where Joseph worked as a travelling salesman and, when Maria signed the suffrage petition, the family were living in Forbury Rd, Caversham. Joseph died in 1897, he is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
Maria died on 5 April 1918 in Merivale, Christchurch, she is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.
