Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane McMahon was born about 1836. She was married to Julius Seehof, shopkeeper, in New Zealand in 1861.

She was probably the mother of Julius’ three children who were born in Australia prior to their marriage. A further six children were born in New Zealand.

The family were living in Invercargill in 1873 where they ran the 'Caledonian Hotel'.

The following year they moved to Riverton where Julius ran a business as a 'draper, clothier, and general importer'.

The family moved back to Invercargill in 1875 where they ran the 'Farmers Arms Hotel', this continued until 1882 when Julius was declared bankrupt.

They then moved to nearby Otautau where they ran the 'Otautau Hotel' offering 'first class accommodation'.

By 1890 the family were in Dunedin where Julius worked as a commission agent and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Athol Place, Dunedin.

Jane died on 7 August 1895 and Julius died in 1898, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
