Helen Ainslie Thomson was born in New Zealand in 1862 – the daughter of Robert Thomson, a nurseryman, and Janet.

She married John Sparrow, a grocer, in 1883 and they had six children.

When Helen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Frederick St, Dunedin.

They later moved to Opoho where John died in 1921, Helen died on 15 October 1930 at her daughter’s home in Waitahuna.

She is buried with John in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
