Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Clara Emma Henrietta Mina Matilda Wetzel was born about 1855 in Berlin.
She emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 on the Ocean Mail and she married James Taylor the following year at Charleston on the West Coast.
They had seven children, one who died in infancy, and they lived at first at Brunnerton before moving to Cobden where Clara signed the suffrage petition.
Around 1900 their son went to South Africa and Clara and James joined him a few years later 'in the hope that change of climate would work an improvement in the health' [of Clara] 'who was inflicted with rheumatism'.
James died in 1911 and Clara died at her home at Mooi River, Natal on 16 July 1919.
Her obituary said she was 'a staunch Methodist'.
