Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Linster/Leinster was born about 1833 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Linster, a road labourer, and Janet Richardson.
Jane married James Passmore, a rope spinner, on 26 August 1853 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. They lived in Govan, Lanarkshire and had at least eight children before they emigrated to Otago about 1873. One final son was born in New Zealand.
The family lived at Whare Flat, Burnside then finally at South Dunedin. In February 1876 James was charged with assaulting his wife - he was bound over to keep the peace. No further trouble was reported after this. Jane's daughter Mary also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
James died in 1897 and Jane died on 31 March 1900. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
