Janet Riddle was born 09 Sep 1864 in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland. She arrived in Port Chalmers, with her family, on the Melita in 1866.
In 1884, at the age of 20, Janet married James Bowie Porteous, a widower with four young children. The couple had a further 11 children together and lived in the Winton area. James died in 1923 followed by Janet in 1945, they are buried together in the Winton Cemetery.
