Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Belcher was born about 1838 in Faringdon, Berkshire, England.

She married John Hounsom, an agricultural labourer, in 1863 in Faringdon.

They had six children before the family emigrated to Otago about 1874 and settled in Dunedin.

Two of their children died in the following two years, and a further five children were born in Dunedin - two of these children died in infancy.

John worked as a maltster and, when Jane signed the suffrage petition, the family were living in Filleul St.

Jane died on 1 June 1909 and John died in 1915, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
