Margaret Ramsay was born in 1863 in Lyttleton, New Zealand – the daughter of Sergeant Major David Ramsay, a police officer, and Margaret.

She married Walter Keay, a journalist, in 1889 in Invercargill and they had three children.

The family lived in Dunedin and Clinton where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

In the mid 1890s the family moved to Winton in South Otago before moving again to Wellington.

Margaret died on 26 April 1934 in Wellington. Her obituary said she 'was of a kindly, generous nature and made a host of life-long friends'.

Walter died in 1945 he is buried with Margaret in the Karori Cemetery.
