Catherine/Kate Russell was born about 1839 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Russell, a clerk, and Margaret Grant.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1850 on the Lady Nugent and they settled in Dunedin.
She married George Kennard, an expressman, on 5 October 1871 and they had four children.
When Kate signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cumberland St, Dunedin.
Kate died on 1 December 1915 and George died in 1928, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
