Susan Hendy Perry was born in 1840 in Cornwall – the daughter of John Perry, an agricultural labourer, and Catherine Ripper.
Susan married Charles Henry King, a contractor, in 1862 in Cornwall and they had three children before they emigrated to Otago about 1869.
One child died in Dunedin in 1870 and a further nine children were born in the following years.
When Susan signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Athol Place, Dunedin.
Charles died in 1918 and Susan died at her home on 6 July 1923, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
