Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jessie Campbell was born about 1860 in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
She married Peter Leman/Lemon, a seaman from Sweden, in Greenock in 1876.
They had three children, one who died in early childhood, before Jessie and her two remaining children emigrated to Otago in 1887 on the Arawa – the shipping records says 'to husband' so presumably Peter had worked his passage earlier.
They settled in Dunedin where they had a further four children, one who died in infancy, and when Jessie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Castle Street.
Jessie died at her home of 7 April 1911 and Peter died at their daughter’s home in 1927. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
