Catherine Stewart was born about 1854 at North Taieri – the daughter of Duncan Stewart, a farmer, and Ann.
She married Robert Lochhead, an importer, in 1880 and they had 3 sons.
When Catherine signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maryhill Terrace, Mornington, Dunedin and Robert was the proprietor of the Universal Supply and Wertheim Sewing Machine Depot which sold perambulators, mangles, wringers and washing machines.
In the 1920s they moved to Petone in Wellington where Catherine died on December 23rd 1928.
Her obituary said she “was a most lovable woman, kind-hearted and esteemed by all those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance”.
Robert died in 1938. They are buried in the Taita Cemetery.
