Margaret Johnstone was born about 1861 in Scotland. She arrived in New Zealand about 1874 and she married Mathew Begg, a surveyor, on September 25th 1883 in Dunedin.
They had 3 children, one who died in infancy, and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Andersons Bay.
Mathew retired in 1921 and they moved to ‘Weka Downs’ at Pukeawa where Mathew died in 1927.
Margaret died on September 10th 1945 in Balclutha – she is buried with Mathew in the Balclutha Old Cemetery.
