Mary Elizabeth Brown was born about 1856 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, she married Alfred Fisher Leach in 1877 in Chortlon, Lancashire.
They had one son before they emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the Wellington.
A further four children were born in New Zealand, one who died at two years of age.
The family lived in Ross St, Rothesay, Dunedin where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
Alfred died at their home in 1927 and Mary died on 23 May 1930 at her son’s home in Dunedin.
They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
