Margaret Brown was born about 1825 in Sunderland, Durham. In 1847,at the age of 22 she married Charles Brown a 66 year old master mariner. They had two daughters before Charles died in 1859.

In 1879 Margaret, along with her daughter Louisa Lowden and family emigrated to New Zealand. In 1879 they arrived in Dunedin on the Taranaki and settled in the Caversham area.

Margaret was living with her daughter in Bathgate St when she died on 21 January 1900. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
